No Longer The Walking Dead

March 3, 2014 · In: LIFESTYLE, Uncategorized

Yeehaw, it’s Monday! Yes, I got down to San Diegooooo, meltdown free! Seriously, after going from super social Californians to cave-dwelling Seattlites (for a year) and then back here again, we are finally getting the hang of this “friend” thing again! For a while I felt like someone from The Walking Dead (one of the zombies who barely has their arms attached, drags their left leg and makes that wraaaaaa sound except with better hair) every time I’d see my friends in California.

On the way down we met up with friends at this trendy “anti-mall” in Orange County with Seattle-esque restaurants and shops amidst the Orange County cement, concrete and strip malls. It was fitting on a rainy day.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We ate fancy, “expensive,” foodie tacos like this steak and potato one Chris is enjoying. That’s an onion sticking out of it, not hair. My fave was the fried chicken taco. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then of course we all had to try out the swanky, gourmand bakery across the way.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAll this knitted stuff on the chairs and light posts was so ironic and artsy. Toto, I don’t think we’re in Orange County anymore.

I got down to SD while Chris stayed in Orange County. Laura and I were driving under a double rainbow and I was trying to capture it (no such luck) as we drove to Del Mar for our girls night with the ladies. Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

These are my friends’ spoiled cats! They have a kitty door that connects to this kitty palace outside. I recall being told that their pet psychic said that the cats wanted to be outside. AAAAND their wishes have been granted.

This one, Buddah, wants morning cuddles.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI want a pet phychic. lol

Two things I learned about this blog and my friends on this trip:

  • People I know actually read this blog (some are men-and yes, you SHOULD be an honorary guest at girls’ night too). One friend told me that she is SHOCKED that I am so open-I’m sorta known to be a very private person. When I married someone much more private than myself, it really opened me up. P.S. Honestly I thought no one was reading this schtuff. 🙂
  • I assumed NO ONE would ever want to be on here but there are some people I know who wouldn’t mind being on the blog. Deal!
  • Just because we were far-away-weirdos for one year doesn’t mean it’s permanent and our friendships are still there.

That was 3 things.

*****This all was very cool to me. Very very cool.

Of course there are like a bazillion more people I wanted to see and places I wanted to go but 4 sets of friends in the 24 hours I spent there was perfect. I spent Saturday night and Sunday in the pregnant lady land of recovery. Hope you had an incredible weekend!!!!

Did you have any shocking revelations this weekend?

It is a funky feeling that I try to forget about so that it doesn’t influence how I write! I try to write as if no one is seeing it so I don’t get self conscious and so I open up a bit more! Yes, great friendships have shown they last. So lucky!

Looks like such a fun weekend! Fried chicken tacos sound incredible! I used to get kind of weirded out when I would find out my friends read my blog but they’re usually cool about it so I am too.

Your weekend looks like a success! So glad you had a great time! I am the type of person that doesn’t really advertise my blog to my friends and family so it is pretty cool to know that some of them really do read it. So I know how to felt when you heard that some people (including men) read your blog.

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
