Hair Envy

July 28, 2014 · In: Baby favorites, Uncategorized

untitled-7270252 untitled-7270272 untitled-7270276 untitled-7270282I forced myself to attend a breastfeeding support group at a place called The Pump Station and Nurtury this week. DO THIS! YOU WILL BE SO HAPPY YOU WENT (if you are breast feeding).

I crash the class late. Grant was hysterical from the car ride and I wanted to calm him before entering the room. I’m asked to introduce myself by the lactation consultant and to share one good thing that happened this week.

“I got to go to the mall and shop for clothes for my husband! My baby didn’t even cry the whole 2 hours there! I had so much fun.”

It’s received by some blank smiles.

Oh LORD…they proabaly said things like, “I set my alarm for 2:30 a.m. and pumped 8000 oz. of breast milk last night.” Or, “I finally let myself take the first shower in 2 months but it was only 2 minutes so that I didn’t take away from baby time, plus we are in a drought.”

Scanning the room, I see I’m not the only one whose kid scratched his own face to bleeding on the way here.

I’ve never seen so many different kinds of bras and “clothed” feeding techniques. One lady had a bra with the nipple area sort of cut out. It was like a eye looking for her son. Homemade? Maybe. Brilliant? Yes. Does it sound like I’m a starer? Yes and I proudly caught some stares in my direction too. One lady wanted to know where I bought my “super cute shirt perfect for breast feeding.” “Oh, this old thing? It’s from Marshalls’ juniors section from a million years ago (but it looks like Anthro).”

I was a “low producer” so hearing the “showoffs” with the huge breasts saying how there was so much milk that it’s falling out all over the place or choking their children to death is like hearing some kind of urban legend. I halfway don’t believe it and I sort of want to see it.

The baby to my left was surely wearing a black wig. The kind that sports fans wear at games. That super thick, you don’t have a prayer for seeing scalp type of look. The baby to my right had a puff of blonde hair that stood up like a hand at the back of his head, as if mocking Grant and I. I compulsively flail hair compliment grenades in every direction with encouraging responses that my kid’s will come.

I was relieved to see my baby wasn’t the only one who wasn’t speaking yet.

I dodged the ladies with “friendly friendship eyes” because I am moving very soon yet again and don’t want to set anyone up for a disappointment (specifically me). Of course I would never want to leave Santa Monica once I was friends with these awesome, cute, funny, fashionable, sweet moms.

I always encourage my friends who have new babies to try attending a bf-ing support group. It’s so nice to be around people who are going through the same things (insomnia! sore boobs! hoping your kid is getting enough nutrients!). I was so shy to nurse out in public but those ladies were top notch at concealing & feeding.

You are always so funny. I still want to meet up while you’re in the area! Plus I’ve only held one baby in the past 10 years and he cried and I gave him back right away, so I need practice.

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
