In The Case Of…

April 10, 2014 · In: Prepared, Uncategorized

Just In Case

  • Comprehensive First Aid Kit
  • Baby wipes
  • Hand crank flashlight
  • Sneakers
  • Hand turbine and solar powered radio with smartphone charger
  • OTC pain killer and any backup prescription meds you need
  • Can opener
  • Non-perishable food
  • Water (and/or water purification tablets)
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Map
  • Cash/gold??

Heaven forbid anything happens where you’ll need these things but in light of the recent earth quakes we’ve been feeling in Southern California (and too much The Walking Dead) we’ve been gathering some things for our home. Another good place to have items is your car.

You could totally go overboard like a Doomsday Prepper (this show is informative as well as hilarious-one guy has an army of MinPins for security in case of a “bug out”).

Some people put these items in a plastic bin or bucket. I think as long as you know where to easily find them, you’re a step ahead.

What else would you add? I wish there were emergency donuts.

Part of being happy is feeling secure and being prepared. Take a moment to think about what you’d need in your neck of the woods and what would be really valuable in case of an emergency.

My emergency kit is a brick to break the window of the 7-11 next door.

I got my first “emergency kit” the first year I was in MA because of the Nemo blizzard. My kit is basically just a Coleman grill with extra propane tanks stashed in the closet haha. Sad emergency kit but I should reconsider…

That is so interesting! I totally didn’t think of something like that. I especially didn’t think about cold weather emergencies! Great tip! We have one of those grills for camping. They work really well! We do need some new canisters though! Great call!

I do not have an emergency kit. I know that is horrible and it is something I should definitely change.

If I had to just get one thing I think it would be that radio. Everything else seems like it could be jerry-rigged or found around, you know?

OMG – I’m totally the type of person to be prepared, but then I realized how under-prepared I was when I saw what some doomsday preppers have got going on! Like, there was a point when I panicked and was like “I think I need to become friends with a doomsday prepper…just in case….” Emergency donuts should totally be on this list, although because they go bad quickly, they must also be eaten quickly.

Bhahahaa. Those doomsday people are so entertaining! I’m so glad someone else watches that stuff. My husband totally loves that show and shows like Gold Rush. LOL I bet if I invented “emergency donuts,” there would be a doomsday market. 😉

No one ever thinks of sneakers. I keep some by the door because what if zombies come to eat me and I have to run?

Oh, totally. lol I saw the sneaker thing on a lot of lists and I thought…hmmm…yes, often i’m just in flip flops. Hey, when I lived in Seattle, it always LOOKED like a zombie apocalypse. 😉

Flip flops would definitely not work even if there was just broken glass. But maybe boots? Girls in apocalypse movies are often in boots.

You know shoes is something I worry about since we leave them at the front door. I might put old sneakers under the bed. Thanks for the reminder.

Oh yes and toilet paper and socks. I built one of these emergency kits for my sister when she turned 16 and got a car. She has a case of water, granola bars, and pretty much everything else listed above.

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
