Gentle Barn

March 24, 2014 · In: LIFESTYLE, Uncategorized

I found out about The Gentle Barn a few weeks ago when I saw a friend on Facebook hugging a beautiful cow.  It’s an animal sanctuary for abused and/or neglected animals located just north of Los Angeles. So we rounded up some family and friends for a Sunday afternoon barn sesh.

Chris was teasing me saying that I was going to stay there petting everything until my hands bled. I could have. Below, you have “Mr. Fancy Pants.” He periodically sticks his head out of this little door and does a loud, crazy gobble then disappears back into the barn. Pure comedy.
turkeyThis piggy was dreaming while a million little hands massaged the coarse fur that covered her 1000 pound body. She even slept as a little kid tugged at her nipples.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThese were the sweetest, calmest little angels. I liked the ones who sunbathed and accepted sweet petting.

We had some help from a docent with picking up this Japanese Silky rooster. He totally loved being held! His feet were HUGE. He had fancy feathers with the nape of his neck sporting an ombre coloring and a few teal blue long feathers in the back.

Your family would LOVE it! It’s so relaxing and soothing. They do work with inner city kids during the week and open it to the public on Sundays. It was so refreshing.

OMG!!! I LOVE places like this! If I could afford it, I have always wanted to have my own farm with rescued animals! Awww…I could stay at a place like this all day and just have fun with the animals 🙂 It looks like you guys had a blast, and so good of you for sharing your experience and bringing attention to this wonderful place! All the animals look soooo happy and relaxed – as they should be!!

You and Ellie (the owner) would be BFFs. She literally told us it was her dream growing up. She is so passionate and even talked about all the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. It was so heartwarming to be around animal lovers and open hearts.

I know, right-the bows! A few of the cows had them and in different colors! Bhahaha. The one cow had a fluff of hair on her head like a toupee! She kind of followed us around. Thank you for the compliment! I ask my husband for daily compliments now that I’m pregnant! lol The sweater is from Anthropologie last summer/fall from the petite collection! It’s a longterm keeper!

Growing up on a farm sounds so charming! I love hugging the animals. When I’ve spent time with friends’ horses, they offer to let me ride but I just want to groom and hug them! OK, I do like a trail ride here and there!

I’ve heard about the Gentle Barn too and though I’ve never been, I’m glad you guys got to go visit.

I hope you don’t mind…hehe, but this is the easiest way for me to reply to your blog comment. You mentioned something about how I do my eye makeup and I’ve been trying to make a video/take some pictures but that’s a work in progress. And you asked who “he” was 🙂 Mr. Man has been out of the country for a few months now and finally returned! I may write more about him on the blog some day.

It really was too much! They were all doll babies! Hey, a nice young lady picked up that fancy rooster and placed him in our arms. lol There is no WAY I was going to risk getting my eyes pecked out. 🙂 She told us to just hold the feathers down. It really felt like I was holding a cat or dog. The rooster really liked it! I could tell!

This place readjusts how I look at food. That’s for sure. It was very beautiful and informative how they supported a vegan lifestyle for sustainability and health. I’m much more motivated to get into my vegetarian menus! Veggie pizza tonight…yes…next is the cheese! 🙂

Bonding with a bunch of sweet animals looks like such a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon. It’s wonderful that they have a sanctuary like this that also allows visitors. It would probably be a lovely experience as well to come back when your child is old enough 🙂 Have a splendid week Christina!

It was so lively! We were so excited by it. It makes you feel kind of like a kid. This facility is so well managed and the animals are so kind. The owner is the real deal. Ellen Degeneres put this place on the map a couple of years ago. i hope you find an awesome one by you!!!

I love this!! Gah I am going to become a somewhat vegetarian before it’s all said and done. I will at least eat what Chris hunts -but I feel so guilty eating meat! Esp pigs and chickens…they are my favorite animals. At a MINIMUM I at least purchase step 5 meat from Whole Foods. So that has to count for something right?

I feel you, Ashley. I do like eating meat but I try to do the Step 5 thing too! Our friend who works for Whole Foods told us all about the steps (I even write a post about it a year or so ago). We do a lot of vegetarian meals too.

How many times was I going to send this listing to How many times was I going to send this listing to my friend and my husband, asking if it’s worth a 45 minute drive to go pick this up?

If I waited any longer, it was going to be gone.

But what if that was a sign that it wasn’t for me?

where was my sign from the universe?

I just knew this was going to give our family room the cozy vibe I wanted.

Everything else in the room was new so it needed something to feel warmer, unexpected, collected and personal.

I kept holding the phone up to the couch trying to picture it.

It belonged here.

She was asking $100 and I asked if $80 would be ok. It was deal and we were off on a long trip, deep into the city.

Was this going straight to Goodwill?

She put the cutest note on top and her roommate helped up load it into our truck.

I dumped a bunch of water on it and gave it a good scrub plus some scraping off of candle wax. No problem!

Truly, what’s meant for you will never pass you by.

When you search and shop with that vibe, all the right stuff will arrive in your feed and you’ll get the perfect piece.

No kidding, within a day of DECIDING my coffee table was going to be on Marketplace, it showed up.

I lived with a front door that hurt my eyes to loo I lived with a front door that hurt my eyes to look at, but here’s why that was the best decision.

First of all that kind of glass was giving privacy but really missing out on the beautiful front yard view.

It was also not letting in as much light that it could, which is important for that side of the house because that’s on the sunset side.

It was a little bit warped from being wood and getting a lot of sun over the years.

First I had to figure out what the whole aesthetic of the exterior was going to be. I had a vision of a French country home.

That got me going with colors and then this grid door felt fresh country and was paintable

Even though I wanted to change that door so so badly for so many years, I painted it to have it blended in with our home war but I’m really so glad I waited because now we have the perfect door for the house

If there’s something that you don’t like about your home, it’s OK to wait because the right designs some times comes together over over time.

The trick is having an inner peace and knowing that the perfect solution is out there and will come to you at the perfect time when you’re ready to give it the attention it needs.

It’s like Michelangelo and the David. It was a block of marble and the David was always in there. Your house is the same way.

This kitchen was a bit of a mind bender for me but the weird thing is that it’s not the kitchen that was the problem.

The thing nobody talks about enough in home design and life is that …

You have to see it in your mind first before anything can change.

Once I drew out my designs, collected inspo images and stared at this space long enough, I was able to visualize what I wanted.

The next part kind of just happened.

It’s like a moving train.

Once you set your ideas and intention on the train-it just goes.

You just have to decide you want it.

Everything falls into place. Don’t worry about the how.

I can’t believe I considered keeping that little step wall at the bar!

So happy with how it turned out.

After 6 pregnancies, 4 kids and closing my breastfeeding chapter, I was 45.

I was feeling so grateful but also started feeling really uncomfortable in my body.

I tried doing the things that would get me back in shape before kids but those things didn’t work the same any more.

Did I have to give up “living” aka enjoying delicious food, cocktails…even donuts?

I didn’t want to be a “salad mom” who didn’t enjoy the cake at birthdays or holiday desserts.

I also wanted to feel great in a pair of jeans. Not trying to be who I was before kids, but be the best version of me.

Confident, youthful, vibrant, energetic and excited about the day, not awkward getting dressed.

Our youngest was under 2 and still waking at night. How was I going to do this?

I was trying so hard and nothing was working. I would give up and try something different.

There had to be a way that would work for me, at my age and with my schedule. Something that was simple.

That’s when I learned how to eat in a way that was satisfying.

I became excited about my meals. They hit my goals with protein and nutrition.

Comment FOOD and I’ll send you a free download of my typical day of eating, in photos,  to show you that you can do it too AND feel satisfied.

You’ll also get my free 7 day weight loss email course.

P.S. I still enjoy girls night, donuts and and birthday cake.

Follow @christinajwarren for more transformation after 45 that feels natural and uplifting using small shifts.
We are put on this earth with the purpose to have We are put on this earth with the purpose to have a good life.

When I live in that frame, I choose to do things that light me up and enjoy life.

Good things come- family, work, love.

Then there are times when I got nervous and choose “the right thing.”

But ya know what, everything works out no matter what.

Sometimes leaning into the fears was what I needed so that I could go for what I really wanted.

At 46 I’m still learning to stay in trust, connection, gratitude and detach from my fears.
