Meltdown Confessional/Cures

February 24, 2014 · In: BABY, Motherhood, Uncategorized

I hope you had a lovely weekend! I did too but it started off crummy for me! I was planning on going to San Diego on Friday but at the last minute, changed my plans! There are lots of really amazing things about being pregnant and I’ll write about those things more later. The thing that has been most challenging is my change in energy level-especially the social energy kind.

I had mistakenly thought a dinner party on Friday night in San Diego (2.5 hours away from our home in LA) was for ladies only and I found out at the last minute that it was for couples. OOPS! Normally that would be no problem: I would just go by myself anyway or Chris could adjust his schedule and go with me.

Because of the last minute realization, Chris’ workload, no nearby established dog sitter (we’re new to town), LA Friday traffic, a few hours to try to coordinate this new scenario and my overwhelm of trying to make it all happen, blah blah…

I had a full-blown, the world is ending, melt down.

Crying, calling Chris at work, staring, tissue balling and sobbing. This meltdown pretty much wiped me out for the rest of the day weekend (crazy, right). I cancelled my lunch plans with a couple of girlfriends and canceled the dinner party as well. It was too much for me to consume at the last minute. This is the second time this sort of thing has happened during pregnancy!

I felt SO sad because I miss my friends in San Diego terribly and I had been wildly anticipating this trip. I also felt like I had let people down and then embarrassed for not being “myself,” the person who was up for anything with boundless energy, amicability and flexibiity. They were all very understanding and I am going to try this again next week!

So how did I flip this around? Well, I called up Jen for an emergency lunch date: an all you can eat Indian buffet on Melrose. We worked on some programming/design for her website. Nothing cures disappointment for me like an OCD project. It’s better than ice cream or donuts.

Chris took me to this awesome hike/path on Saturday and I got to “jog” for the second time this week. It’s slow and plodding but it is AWESOME. Running has always made me so happy. I wanted Chris to take photos so I could have “proof” and memories of being pregnant, active and lovin’ it.

IMG_3695Running with this little bowling ball gives me a funny gait but it’s cute and I like it! I went slow and took lots of breaks. It was glorious.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetThen I made some chocolate chip, walnut banana bread (the one I’ve had pegged on Pinterest). I got/modified the recipe via Pam of A Little Glitter, via I Heart Naptime aaaaaaand it’s killer. It made 2 loaves: one for us and one for Chris’ parents.

IMG_3727We tied up the weekend with a family birthday party for Chris’ stepmom at a fun Mexican restaurant. It was so great hanging out with family. THENNNNN I took a 2 hour nap. Happy or Else, right?

Thank you for all the great comments on my site updates and photos! They make me the happiest! XO

I think it’s great to honor and take care of yourself when you are out of sorts. It happens, and especially when you are pregnant. Great post.

You are so right. I really miss those hard, stress breaking workouts! I gotta say though, some of my yoga classes are fall-on-the-ground tough! So I’m thankful for those!

Aww, I’m sorry to hear you had a melt down (darn hormones, they get me every time and I’m not even pregnant… you get the extra emotional mommy pass, for sure!) but, I’m happy to see your weekend turned around and ended on a happy note. Your “baby bump” is too cute!! And jogging?! You go girl!!

Thanks, Abby. 🙂 I seriously want a “mommy pass!” It’s hard giving myself permission to do things “for myself” when I feel like I’m letting people down! The weekend turned out great and I’m glad for the lesson in learning to take it easier on myself.

I’m glad that you were able to salvage your weekend despite the little melt down – but it’s totally okay!! I guess you can blame it on the pregnancy – haha! I mean, chocolate chip banana bread can automatically make me go from miserable to the happiest girl alive. I hope it did for you 🙂 ALSO, I LOVE the new logo, lady! Sounds like a good weekend despite the change of plans and the melt-down. Those kind of melt-downs can happen to anyone, pregnant or not. I’ve been through those kind of melt-downs without being pregnant even if it’s really unusual. Oh gosh! I just realized that if I can get those kind of melt-downs without being pregnant what will happen if I ever get pregnant? SUPER MELT_DOWNS haha 🙂 Have an amazing week!

I’m sure your friends don’t mind! I’m an overthinker when I’m sad so I just try my best to keep busy. Doing anythinggg.

You poor thing! This is my first time on your blog and I feel so bad that you had a melt down. I’ve heard that things like that happen when you are pregnant because of the changes in your body and whatnot. I’m glad Chris was able to turn your weekend around. I actually just had a melt down on Valentine’s Day, I posed about it on my blog. I just use my work to distract me, so glad your friend was around for the emergency lunch!
So glad I found your blog!

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
