My lovely Grandmother passed away yesterday.

Grandma gave me the strongest sense of belonging in this world…

She was the bridge to my American heritage.

When I was at a difficult crossroads in life, it was Grandma who said, “Tina, everything is ok, I know you have a reason. Come visit me.”

She hummed and sang as she worked, evolving even at 99—using her iPhone. She never forgot a birthday.

Arthritis didn’t stop her from knitting blankets for everyone.

She had her share of losses—two siblings before they turned 18 and outliving so many loved ones in her 99 years—yet she lived with positivity and grace.

I see her home as the gold standard for design with everything from marble window sills to stained glass to even linoleum kitchen flooring. The magical combination of fine taste, “not too much” plus a little novelty.

As a young girl in Japan, Grandma sent me a stack of recorded VHS tapes of Anne of Green Gables. The perfect companion for a young girl figuring out life.

My grandparents fostered children who were to be adopted and she recently shared an email with me of a women who is now grown with kids and so happy.

They lived in the same house from their 40s. It was the home I came to when I was born, as my mom (who lived in Korea with my Dad at the time) stayed with them for three months so I could become a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Every time I visit, I close my eyes and take in the smells that feel like part of my physical being. The plaster walls, the blue dish soap, the “bad coffee” as my dad jokingly calls it. An omelette made with Kraft cheese singles that tastes gourmet because she made it.

I know she’s overjoyed to be reunited with my grandfather.

I cannot believe how lucky I am to have had her to keep me tethered in this world. I love her so much.

🍲 Easy Garlic Prep in 4 Steps:
1. Purchase organic peeled garlic (I get it from Costco)
2. Wash/Dry/Trim ends
3. Spread the chopped garlic in a single layer in freezer ziplock and use the BACK of a knife to score a grid of squares (this made 2 large freezer bags)
4. Remove as much air as possible for freshness.
5. Store in the freezer, and it’ll stay ready-to-use for up to three months.

I’ve seen my mom and other Korean moms of her generation doing this since I was a kid and it’s a game changer!

Chopping up a few cloves of garlic was the thing that was making me dread dinner prep and this now feels like I have my own sous chef.

As high-achievers, we know every minute counts—and sometimes the simplest hacks can give us back time and headspace. Little habits like this cut down on the tiny obstacles that add up, helping us focus on what really matters. It’s all about making room for ease in a full life, with small steps that reduce stress.

Steps:
1. Define the architectural style of your home to narrow down your color options.

Would you like a French farmhouse, or a mountain cabin? Transformation is possible, but be realistic about how many levels you can shift the look of your home.

2. Decide if you’re open to changing elements like the roof, brick, or trim for a cohesive look.

Because I was willing to change the color of the stone roof and even the wood accents, it really opened up the possibilities.

3. Choose your color scheme’s vibe—cool or warm—based on your overall aesthetic goals.

We had to replace our roof years ago and although I didn’t know my final design plan, I knew that I wanted a cool toned exterior so we chose a cool gray shingle roof.

When I work a client, I guide them through this deeply customized process to find the perfect look for their home.
