Fa-la-la-la-less Stress: 3 Merry Motherhood Mindset Shifts for a Holly, Jolly Season

October 30, 2024 · In: Happiness, Happy Habits

Imagine a typical day leading up to the holidays and tell me if you have ever frozen in the middle of a store (or browsing online) and began to spiral: I have no idea what to get so and so for a gift, did I check the stove, omg my zipper is down, did the kids need a carrot or a potato for that school project, when was the last time I ate, are we double booked on Saturday for 2 different holiday parties…? How does this even feel like the holidays? I just want it to be over!

It’s the most magical time of the year if we want it to be and with a few simple mindshifts you can put this season into perspective. By the end of this post, you will be able to go from over-obligation to enjoyment, release Pinterest pressure to see present beauty and stop rushing so you can live in the moment.

From Too Many Choices to Intentional Options

Decision fatigue hits a whole new way during the holidays. There are so many options for activities, crafts, decor, gifting and food.

Pick 3 meals that you really want to savor over these months.

Have a signature gift and give the same one to many people on your list.

Focus on one design vignette in your home like the mantle or front door to pour the most of your creativity. Relax with the rest.

Explore the power of offering limited, curated activity choices to your family.

  • Examples of holiday choice pairings to get everyone feeling involved:
    • “Tonight we can do hot cocoa and Christmas movies or drive to see lights”
    • “We can bake cookies this afternoon or write cards to grandparents”
    • “Would you like to help wrap presents or help decorate the tree?”

From Pinterest Pressure to Present Beauty

It is so natural and healthy to want to create beauty. There is nothing wrong in wanting everything to be lovely.

Put your heart into your entertaining and see the beauty you create for what it is right now, not what you had imagined it would be.

Getting caught up in personal disappointments can disconnect us in the moments we want to be most present.

    • Find the sweet spot between creating beauty and staying present
    • Give yourself permission to let some moments be beautifully imperfect
    • Embrace blending beautiful style with the natural chaos of family life

From Scattered to Sacred Moments

Rushing through even the most special traditions can rob us of their magic. Create space for presence. Say yes to less. Keep days on the calendar blank.

Find joy in the small quiet moments between the big events. Simply put on Elf or listen to music while kids color. Coloring is one of my favorite family traditions I started a while back. Honestly they grumble but end up having a great time. HA! The reason I do it is because it slows us down.

You've Got This

You deserve to experience the magic too. Choose just one mindshift to incorporate this season. Embrace the season and give yourself permission to feel less pressure. I am wishing you a great one, friend!

It looked so bad but wasn’t sure if it was just cosmetic thing or something I should get checked out for my health.

I was avoiding it and “waiting until I had time” to deal with it as a mom of 4.

I finally made time and l’m so glad I did.

This was the start of my health journey at 45.

This makes our weekdays so much less chaotic, and I don’t feel like a scullery maid-I feel like I have a personal chef!

I get to focus my time and energy on connecting with the kids or taking a moment to rest.

Throw these together really quickly this weekend for a smooth week.

The mini meat loafies are a quick snack, packable lunch item or dinner main.

The turkey taco meat is so quick and you can make so many different dishes with it.

I like to cook my veggies day-of or have some washed and prepped in containers.

Have you considered a “pattern interrupt” element Have you considered a “pattern interrupt” element to design your space and make it stand out?

A design element that just doesn’t make total sense but adds the zest to the room that just makes it?

But why is it so hard to figure out the exact thing that will make your space special?

You’re an emotional decorator! You’re someone who walks into a room and knows she loves it but can’t explain why.

I’m here to help!

Part II of Translating what we love about this space-Nancy Meyers edition!

This iconic kitchen from It’s Complicated, is so funny because Jane is in the works to finally renovate to get her DREAM KITCHEN and we would all love to have this one as it is right now!

Why?

Notice that there are layers of detail from floor to ceiling and even ceiling!

If you want your home decor to feel cozy, there’s nothing like decorating every surface.

Keep it neutral if too much business overwhelms you.
When I spotted this window shelf in the movie, I thought it would be the perfect way to add some interest to our very boxy dining room-my pattern interrupt.

All the moms at the mommy and me meetup looked so All the moms at the mommy and me meetup looked so amazing. I wondered what their secret was.

When was I going to bounce back like that?

Everyone was being vulnerable so when it was my turn I said, “I still can’t fit into my old jeans.”

One of the moms looked at me and said, “I just bought new jeans.”

I was shocked! She looked amazing!

I thought that if I bought jeans for my current “larger size” as in “not my ideal size,” it would mean I was settling for my current state that I didn’t want.

Then it hit me.

When you see yourself as worthy and do things that make you feel great-like new clothes that fit, your mind does something you’re not even aware of.

when your brain says, “I look cute” then you’re just going to continue to look better on a subconscious level.

Why?

Your self image improves and when it does, you do things in alignment with a good self image like eating better or moving more or learning how to do your hair at its best!
