A Day As A Mother of a One Year Old

July 6, 2015 · In: BABY, Motherhood

IMG_7289IMG_7298If I had known then what I know now I would have taken the little baby away in a stroller for an hour so his parents could get some sleep.

We had some friends visiting us in Seattle with their one year old a few years ago. We had NO idea what that life was like. If I had known, I would have happily done the easiest little things to make their life SO much better during that visit!

I want to write this down so I can look back on it one day and remember what life was like these days as the mother of a one year old.

This is going to start out like I’m pretty spoiled and that’s probably right.

7:00 a.m.

On the days Chris works from home my day starts with me waking up around 7-8 a.m. I hear Grant downstairs with Chris. Grant’s had breakfast and they are playing. There is often a drive through Starbucks coffee for me and sometimes even a little pastry.

OK, this sounds ridiculous. Do I do anything? Yes. I do.

Now Chris goes to shower while I nurse Grant and make us all breakfast. Chris gets started with work in his office while Grant and I play, go for a bike ride or a walk. Then bath time.

He gets sleepy after a couple of hours (he’s been up since 6:00 a.m.). Getting him to actually fall asleep could mean more nursing or carrying him in an Ergo (baby backpack) while I clean up breakfast.

10:00 a.m.

Once he goes down to sleep, that is time to do laundry (something nearly impossible to do while Grant is awake). I do any little chore that involved up and downstairs etc.

11:30 a.m.

Time for lunch! I make us all something to eat or once a week we go out for lunch-usually a hipster Vietnamese place that is SOOO good and feels healthy.

12:30 p.m.

Go run an errand like diapers at Target or mail something at the post office. Walk IKEA with Grant in the Ergo while we share an ice cream. Meet a mom friend for a play date. Go to a swim lesson. Grocery shopping.

3:00 p.m.

Nap time again. Hopefully I’ve timed this so that we are driving home from our afternoon activity and he falls asleep in the car on the way home. I take the carseat to his room when we get home.

I take a moment to do anything that takes my full attention like scheduling upcoming doctor appointments etc. Then I edit photos for work.

4:00 p.m.

Grant wakes and it’s snack time!

We go to the park and he walks everywhere pointing at everything then scrunching his nose and stopping to dance.

5:30 p.m.

Cook dinner then playtime.

7:00 p.m.

Bedtime routine. We go to Grant’s room, read books, change clothes, brush teeth and then cuddle and nurse until he falls asleep.

8:30 p.m

He is usually asleep by this time. I clean up dinner while Chris picks up toys. We watch a show while I edit photos, write a blog post (been falling behind) and cruise social media. Chris looks at real estate and plays video games. We chit chat about news, make predictions about The Bachelorette. Then we go to sleep too late.

11:00 p.m.

Adults go to sleep.

4:00 a.m.

Grant wakes up and I go in to sooth and nurse him back to sleep. Hopefully this is the only wake-up. We have had many full nights of sleep but wake ups are pretty common. This process is now down to about 20 minutes. Then I go back to bed.

He has short spurts of self-play/entertainment throughout the day where I kind of check out and peruse Instagram or do some web window shopping. Every once in a while I will do a short phone call with someone to catch up.

I had no idea this is what toddler moms did during the day. There are a few hours in the day where I get to do stuff and I use most of that time to do chores or work.

So far this has been my favorite age for him because his personality is coming through and he is very interactive.

This is what people might have meant when they told me mom-life was isolating. Well, yes, compared to pre-mom life, there is less opportunity to feel connected to the world.

I get some anxiety about it sometimes-do people I love think I do not care about them because I haven’t called to check in on them? I wonder what they are doing? I will put it on my to-do list to call them tomorrow. Grant didn’t take any naps today so I didn’t get around to calling anyone… something came up and I had to to that during nap time instead of checking off my to-do list! HA!

I get to see everything through Grant’s eyes as he enjoys discovering. I also get to spend a lot of time with Chris. On weekends we see family and friends, making the rounds very slowly but surely. I get to work as a photographer at a pace that fits into all of this and it gives me the outlet I need.

Our next step is getting a routine baby sitter and start going on dates!

I understand you completely Christina! Life is very different now than pre baby and the one thing that drives me crazy is that I don’t have enough time to do everything I want to. Blogging for example…I am so behind. I love your routine and we have a similar one when I am not working. Great reading this post and happy to see that we mamas go through the same things 🙂

you make it sound kinda awesome 🙂 that’s great you are into a routine and seem to have found some balance with having alone time with your hubby, doing photography and staying in touch. it is definitely tough to juggle everything and i’m sure your family/friends don’t feel neglected!

WOW, Jackie! Thank you! HA! I am so amazed by how people juggle so many things. I’m really learning how to be patient and be nicer to myself about what I can get done. 🙂

How many times was I going to send this listing to How many times was I going to send this listing to my friend and my husband, asking if it’s worth a 45 minute drive to go pick this up?

If I waited any longer, it was going to be gone.

But what if that was a sign that it wasn’t for me?

where was my sign from the universe?

I just knew this was going to give our family room the cozy vibe I wanted.

Everything else in the room was new so it needed something to feel warmer, unexpected, collected and personal.

I kept holding the phone up to the couch trying to picture it.

It belonged here.

She was asking $100 and I asked if $80 would be ok. It was deal and we were off on a long trip, deep into the city.

Was this going straight to Goodwill?

She put the cutest note on top and her roommate helped up load it into our truck.

I dumped a bunch of water on it and gave it a good scrub plus some scraping off of candle wax. No problem!

Truly, what’s meant for you will never pass you by.

When you search and shop with that vibe, all the right stuff will arrive in your feed and you’ll get the perfect piece.

No kidding, within a day of DECIDING my coffee table was going to be on Marketplace, it showed up.

I lived with a front door that hurt my eyes to loo I lived with a front door that hurt my eyes to look at, but here’s why that was the best decision.

First of all that kind of glass was giving privacy but really missing out on the beautiful front yard view.

It was also not letting in as much light that it could, which is important for that side of the house because that’s on the sunset side.

It was a little bit warped from being wood and getting a lot of sun over the years.

First I had to figure out what the whole aesthetic of the exterior was going to be. I had a vision of a French country home.

That got me going with colors and then this grid door felt fresh country and was paintable

Even though I wanted to change that door so so badly for so many years, I painted it to have it blended in with our home war but I’m really so glad I waited because now we have the perfect door for the house

If there’s something that you don’t like about your home, it’s OK to wait because the right designs some times comes together over over time.

The trick is having an inner peace and knowing that the perfect solution is out there and will come to you at the perfect time when you’re ready to give it the attention it needs.

It’s like Michelangelo and the David. It was a block of marble and the David was always in there. Your house is the same way.

This kitchen was a bit of a mind bender for me but the weird thing is that it’s not the kitchen that was the problem.

The thing nobody talks about enough in home design and life is that …

You have to see it in your mind first before anything can change.

Once I drew out my designs, collected inspo images and stared at this space long enough, I was able to visualize what I wanted.

The next part kind of just happened.

It’s like a moving train.

Once you set your ideas and intention on the train-it just goes.

You just have to decide you want it.

Everything falls into place. Don’t worry about the how.

I can’t believe I considered keeping that little step wall at the bar!

So happy with how it turned out.

After 6 pregnancies, 4 kids and closing my breastfeeding chapter, I was 45.

I was feeling so grateful but also started feeling really uncomfortable in my body.

I tried doing the things that would get me back in shape before kids but those things didn’t work the same any more.

Did I have to give up “living” aka enjoying delicious food, cocktails…even donuts?

I didn’t want to be a “salad mom” who didn’t enjoy the cake at birthdays or holiday desserts.

I also wanted to feel great in a pair of jeans. Not trying to be who I was before kids, but be the best version of me.

Confident, youthful, vibrant, energetic and excited about the day, not awkward getting dressed.

Our youngest was under 2 and still waking at night. How was I going to do this?

I was trying so hard and nothing was working. I would give up and try something different.

There had to be a way that would work for me, at my age and with my schedule. Something that was simple.

That’s when I learned how to eat in a way that was satisfying.

I became excited about my meals. They hit my goals with protein and nutrition.

Comment FOOD and I’ll send you a free download of my typical day of eating, in photos,  to show you that you can do it too AND feel satisfied.

You’ll also get my free 7 day weight loss email course.

P.S. I still enjoy girls night, donuts and and birthday cake.

Follow @christinajwarren for more transformation after 45 that feels natural and uplifting using small shifts.
We are put on this earth with the purpose to have We are put on this earth with the purpose to have a good life.

When I live in that frame, I choose to do things that light me up and enjoy life.

Good things come- family, work, love.

Then there are times when I got nervous and choose “the right thing.”

But ya know what, everything works out no matter what.

Sometimes leaning into the fears was what I needed so that I could go for what I really wanted.

At 46 I’m still learning to stay in trust, connection, gratitude and detach from my fears.

Beautiful words by the lovely @inagarten
