Lighting Food Photographs At Home

May 18, 2015 · In: Photography

IMG_7201IMG_7208Lighting my photographs is such a fun challenge. Here are some really simple methods I use to light my home food photographs.

First, I love contrast. I often use a simple white background. I use white tabletops, slabs of marble (pastry slabs), or sometimes just white foam board. For a more moody look, use a dark background like my dining table.

In these photos, I brought the plate/items over to my dining table by a window. I am facing the food and the window is at my right. This window side lighting creates a nice, bright, and interesting light on the food. This way you get some shadows. I love to do food photographs in the morning by a bright window.

I don’t have a very bright home so I need to boost my ISO up to 1250, bump down my shutter speed to 200 and open my aperture to 2.8 sometimes to get the look I want.

The waffles were shot on a sunny morning and the cookies were shot on a cloudy morning.

What tips/websites/Instagram accounts help you in food styling and photography?

Totally, Jackie! High ISO used to freak me out too. Go for it! Some cameras are really great at high ISO. I also use LIGHTROOM to edit so I can boost up the exposure a bit there too. Thank you!!! YES, make one to eat and one to photograph HA!

    This is actually really helpful!
I don’t have a lot of white surfaces in our flat except for the girls’ bedrooms, so I think I’ll get that white coffee table from IKEA for my photos.

The next issue is that my aperture only goes to 3.5 max, more often 4ish, when I have the camera set on A. Gosh darn it, I need to take a photography course specific to Nikon I think. But these are great tips!

A white table from IKEA would be awesome, Elisa! You know I just use a ton of those foam boards or a presentation board from Staples. I also use LIGHTROOM to edit so I can boost up the exposure a bit there too. Canon or Nikon, you can learn to shoot manual very quickly. It just takes some practice. Look up “manual mode cheat sheet” on Pinterest. Find one that makes sense to you. Print it out and practice with it. Bruises and Bandaids is a great blog for learning how to shoot manual. She shows TONS of examples with exact settings and lighting/time situations. I am going to check in on your progress! Thank you!

I had to simplify weight loss because I have so many other things I want to pour my energy into!

You see me doing a million things but I’m actually impatient and lazy. I’m a Taurus who loves to lounge and eat donuts.

I found a way to eat donuts, lose weight and do it with the least effort.

The food is easy. The prep is easy. I don’t even think about it anymore.

I started my journey in the summer and it was the best life upgrade of the year.

There have been times when I thought gosh how did I get into this situation?

I had to remind myself that I could get myself out of it.

I had to remind myself that I had the power to create the life that I wanted.

I hope there’s something that you want that you’ve decided to experience for yourself.

1. Tying my worthiness to outcomes- at the end of each day I focus on how the day felt, over what got done.

There are days when I am a super DOER and I also have heartburn.

I want less days like that and more days that feel peaceful regardless of the list.

2. Earning rest-If I feel like eating donuts and sleeping on the sofa all Saturday morning, that’s awesome. Don’t need permission and don’t need to apologize-just enjoy.

3. Saying “I should”- That’s a 100% red flag for something I SHOULDN’T do.

That’s a signal that it’s something that someone else says I should be doing-not my inner authority.

4. Needing things to be hard- I say things like “Show me how easy this gets to be,” (and I believe it). The proof presents itself.

It’s so frustrating to feel like you can’t improve It’s so frustrating to feel like you can’t improve your life. You feel like you need more- money, creativity, luck.

That’s actually not true though.

When I fall into this trap, I do this…

Here’s the trick.

When you ask yourself “why is this so hard” your brain goes to work finding every reason it is.

BUT when you ask “why is this so easy for me?” “Why is it all falling into place?”

Your brain has to find proof of that instead.

Different question. A completely different experience.

Keep asking that question all day! Stop asking “Is it working?” Just do it!

Try it on your house. Your body. Anything you’ve been stuck on and tell me what happens!

How many times was I going to send this listing to How many times was I going to send this listing to my friend and my husband, asking if it’s worth a 45 minute drive to go pick this up?

If I waited any longer, it was going to be gone.

But what if that was a sign that it wasn’t for me?

where was my sign from the universe?

I just knew this was going to give our family room the cozy vibe I wanted.

Everything else in the room was new so it needed something to feel warmer, unexpected, collected and personal.

I kept holding the phone up to the couch trying to picture it.

It belonged here.

She was asking $100 and I asked if $80 would be ok. It was deal and we were off on a long trip, deep into the city.

Was this going straight to Goodwill?

She put the cutest note on top and her roommate helped up load it into our truck.

I dumped a bunch of water on it and gave it a good scrub plus some scraping off of candle wax. No problem!

Truly, what’s meant for you will never pass you by.

When you search and shop with that vibe, all the right stuff will arrive in your feed and you’ll get the perfect piece.

No kidding, within a day of DECIDING my coffee table was going to be on Marketplace, it showed up.
