Heaven Surprises

P7130037 P7130028 P7060001What’s scary? Getting to heaven and finding out that aluminum antiperspirant is totally harmless to the body. That’s one of my greatest fears. All those years where I struggled though natural, virtually ineffective deodorants. The countless awkward hugs I had to give people where I kept my elbows pinned to my sides-the kind that make the other person self conscious of their breath. I look like a robot.

I have been using natural deodorants (not antiperspirant) for years since I started grad school for acupuncture where I was surrounded by healthy, smart hippies. In the past few years I’ve gone from dappling quitter to full-blown achiever.

I don’t smell like patchouli or anything (no offense patchouli wearers). What’s patchouli? It’s what you smell when a blonde guy with bead adorned dreads and no t-shirt skateboards by you in Venice Beach, LA. It’s followed by a wisp of pot smoke. He’s wearing patchouli. Hey, I’m friends these people but I have my own repertoire of alluring scents that I’m attracted to.

This is my current combo: deodorant, powder. It does the trick for about 4-6 hours in mild temperatures.

Here are some images of the week. I wore real deodorant TWICE, Jen took me to Rite Aid and we had more awesome visitors. I forget to take photos of everyone though (Kate).

Going to Rite Aid felt like NORDSTROM after 6 weeks of shopping for diaper powder online. I got makeup remover pads (for the 1 day a week I wear makeup), floss (2 for $10-WHAT!?), birthday cards, gift certificates (for gifts), the blue polish (Instagram), and 2 scoops of bad/good ice cream.

After coming home from little stints at sea when I was in the Navy I would often get takeout sushi to eat alone on the floor of the apartment where I lived alone. There’s no sitting on the floor nor much alone time on a ship. It was my piece of heaven, including antiperspirant.

Have you ever been away from some creature comforts for a bit? What was the first thing you wanted?

I have read about deodorant being bad for you before and I do think I should likely try to find a better option that my current brand. I have also been kind of worried about my makeup in the last month or so and I will admit to wearing it a little less often that usual because I do not like that those chemicals are getting absorbed by my body. I need to take the time to find more natural brands to use.

Jessica! Check out: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ for details on some products. Look, sometimes I get crazy about my lotions and other times I want to look my best and don’t care WHAT is in that MAC Fix + spray. 🙂 Let me know if you find something natural that you love!

Look, if you are out there in the world and want to be perceived as a clean/nice person and not homeless, you’ve just got to wear the real stuff. I am homeless smelling as a stay at home mom. When I leave the cave, I really need to put on the real deal or I may have my child taken away from me for abuse. lol

The baby cuteness gets me every time… and then your hilarious stories make me so excited to be reading your blog every week! The last pic of his “crazy eyes” is just hilarious! Frame that beauty. 🙂 I’m glad to hear you’re finding comfort in the little things, even if it IS just Rite Aid for now. 😉 Have a wonderful week! xoxo

Thank you, Abby! LOL crazy eyes! Totally. Rite Aid has come a long way! They even had a selection of gluten free foods! Wow! I bet the baby will love that I posted terrible pics of him someday! He’ll have to learn to appreciate this humor if he didn’t inherit it!

A lot of antiperspirants have aluminum. I’m not sure if it’s good or bad. There is a lot of literature on it being bad and I err on that side often. BUT I totally still wear it! LOL I just use it more sparingly and do the hippie stuff most of the time.

So funny! I wore no-aluminum deodorant for years before I had Clark! Ever since then, I smell so badly that I have had to go back to using anti-perspirant. In those early days, just after having him, I sweat so much. Stink machine!

LOL deodorant *SIGH* it’s the little things ha! Mine was hot water, a nice hot long shower. It’s like favorite past time to shower…not so much for the cleanliness (however that’s important) but for the relaxation I get from it.

Good one. I had a roommate who took nightly baths with a glass (bottle) of wine. It was her ritual and I was always kind of envious but NOW showering is sort of a ritual where I get some alone time!

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
