Pirates & Madonna/Weekly Monday Posts For Now

June 23, 2014 · In: BABY

readmonday-2monday-3monday

Mind/Pirate Eye

There are things that make you the devil when you’re a mom, like giving your kid formula or pacifiers or having them sleep in your bed. I’ve done all these things. In most jobs I’ve had, I’ve followed the straight and narrow book of goodie-ness but these past three weeks have been like Naked and Afraid (the TV show where a man and a woman are stranded naked together and have to survive for 3 weeks in a remote locale).

He’s slept in our bed. I’ve slept on the couch downstairs with him in the rocker by my side. He’s slept in a pack and play. I’ve slept with him breastfeeding on my lap…on my side in bed. Yes, sounds like a lot of sleeping…not really. Everything I read scares me so I don’t read much, I just sleep like a pirate with one eye open unless Chris is awake and has him.

Body/Madonna Abs

It’s been 3 weeks since having the baby. At week 2 I lost at least 20 pounds (I gained a bit over 40 in total but stopped weighing at the end). I’ve hovered here.

I totally threw out my back right away and it’s coming back now-WEAR THAT BACK BRACE THEY GIVE YOU AT THE HOSPITAL. Appartently it’s not the Hollywood-get-your-Madonna-abs-back-tummy-shaper I assumed it to be.

My stomach is pretty flat, it just feels like there is a thick layer of Jell-O resting on top of 8-year-old girl abs BUT the abs ARE there now.

There is a light brown line (my linea alba isn’t alba) going down the center of my stomach from my ribs to my belly button and the belly button is unusually large/cartoony looking.

I’ll take it.

Soul/Psych Ward

What made me insanely jealous and mad this week? My husband going out to lunch with people from work. Yes, this is a crazy cooped up new-mom lady these days. Chris has offered many times to watch the baby while I go out to do something fun but I’m scared to drive the “milk truck” away from home.

I have a little milk pumped in some bottles in the fridge but those are like my “if I go unconscious or there is a global emergency type of bottles.” They ARE starting to look like “mani and pedi freedom bottles/save your marriage bottles,” however.

Hey, you look at the cute baby and don’t care about all this stuff.

I will see you in a week!

Thanks, Jackie! I want to know how other people “bounce” back into real life. I just like hearing how everything that’s been happening is “normal!” Things get easier every day!

I love the pictures (I don’t think he could be ANY cuter!) and I love your sarcastic commentary on life as you know it right now. Your posts seriously crack me up- they are the BEST. I do hope you get a little “me” time when you feel you’re ready for it. 🙂 I’m looking forward to next Monday now!

Love that. “Me” time is shower time! LOL. No, I’m working up to it. Now we are opening up the house to more visitors and that is helping too!!! XO I need encouragement like your’s though! Thanks!

Hang in there sweet mama! And you should get out even if you stay close. Even a little break will probably do wonders for you and you so deserve it.

Thank you, Rowena! Yes, I’m getting out now!! At the least I go on a walk. We have a bunch of walkable eating places that we’ve ventured to as well. We even went to a hardware store the other day for a toilet part! Yay! It was fast but great!

Thank you, Jessica! You know in this tired fog, I don’t really care much about what’s cute anymore! Ha! As I get more rest, I get a little more interested in picking out the cuter stuff he has as opposed to just grabbing the plain stuff! The weight will be interesting as the time goes by..we’ll see what happens! I’m totally relaxed about it.

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
