Why Happy Or Else: 1 Year Anniversary

February 17, 2014 · In: Uncategorized

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Thank you so much for reading, commenting, reaching out and emailing. If you have a blog or even a Facebook account, you know that wonderful feeling that comes with “likes” and comments. Technically, I started the blog on February 14th of  2013 but I wanted to wait until today to post this.

Why I named the blog Happy or Else

It was another gloomy winter morning in Seattle, Washington some time last year. My mother-in-law’s health was quickly declining, the weather in my new zip code was bleak, my husband was contemplating quiting his job and I missed my friends and lifestyle in sunny San Diego. I sat straight up in bed and said to myself (out loud) “I’m going to be happy or else!”

IMG_2011

I felt out of control of my happiness-a first. It was also the first time I had so MUCH control of my time-I wasn’t working or in school. Desparate housewife much? I had started putting together the idea of writing a blog to give structure to my newly-non-working days, provide an education in something new and connect with people. There had to be a way to rekindle that inner, legendary, happy hamster. AND it worked. Well, the blog as well as saying goodbye to Chris’ mom, Chris getting a new job and us moving back to California.

The blog was a practice to anchor my days, I met wonderful people, learned new skills and made little steps of progress. It’s a place to celebrate simple daily decadence, happy revalations and find out who in the world gets things this way.

Here is a photo review of this year

February 14, 2013, I launched the blog with this post about Five Reasons To Pay Top Dollar For A Service And When To Do It.

I did my first guest post on Eat Drink Shop Love: City Guide: Seattle, Washington.

Pike's Market on my birthday! We had TONS of fun at the Seattle Sounders soccer games with seasons tickets. We even scheduled our “first wedding” at the court house right before a game!

Sounders Game

I got to live in the same city as my sister (for a hot second-we overlapped for a month) and parents. It was wonderful.

We moved from Seattle, back to Southern California. We had the freedom to visit friends and attend weddings.

DSC02982We enjoyed our second wedding, a Korean wedding.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThen our third wedding, in Paris.COH_20130911195-73We got to travel Europe with our family.St. Peter's Basilica

Then we found out we were having a baby.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Now I’m super excited to be a mom. I’m using these last few months before the baby comes to tighten up the site, improve my photography, read and see friends. Hey, there could be a fourth wedding too.

Thanks for coming along! Let me know who you are and if you have a blog, I’d love to know where the name came from.

You are so nice, Wendy! They were very concise little weddings/elopements! Not much to do. 🙂 We are planning a very casual little party soon to celebrate our marriage and baby with our friends.

I love that you mentioned that the blog gives structure to your days. Getting used to staying at home has been weird for me, and the blog has definitely given me a reason to get up and do stuff on the days when I don’t have anything planned!

It was totally weird and I’m glad I had this time before having the baby to figure it out and finally learn how to enjoy it. 🙂 It was really hard for a while and I still have my struggles at times. I would love to talk to you more about it! The blog has surely has inspired me to do more as well! Thank you, Becca.

happy one year blogiversary! what an amazing year for you. i’m kinda jealous of your Korean wedding ceremony – I briefly thought about doing one as well (I just love bright pretty hanboks!) but since all of my Korean family (minus my mom) lives in Korea it wasn’t feasible. yours looks sooo pretty!

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
