My Book Choices Tell All

February 4, 2014 · In: Happiness

DSC03009I bought this book at LAX at the start of our trip and two days later, it was finished. Remember that movie The Joy Luck Club? Amy Tan wrote that book-turned-movie too. It’s been a LONG time since I burned through a novel like this. Some books that come to mind are The Mists of Avalon or Wicked.

(notice the bump at the bottom of the photo)

My sister used to say she could spot a movie my dad would like in a second-the ones where the main character is someone he wanted to be-i.e. James Bond or The Bourne Identity.

My faves:

  • Strong, smart and suffering-in-silence-type female main character with complex thoughts/feelings, loves donuts and finally finds someone who understands her
  • Unlikely/forbidden love matches (think The English Patient or Atonement)
  • Adversity/harships
  • Traditions
  • Honor/sense of duty and ethical struggles
  • A little magic

What does your favorite movie or book show about you? It’s really vulnerable isn’t it?

Sorry! I feel like the time I asked a classmate if she was pregnant. She was not. Learned my lesson there! 🙂 I read about a halmoni, I think, in a post and got excited!

no need to be sorry? after all these years, I don’t usually correct people when they assume we are married, but I didn’t want to lie on the internet, haha. And yes there is a 하모니 who knits some pretty cozy scarves 🙂

I don’t know what my book choices say about me, either. I like YA, chick lit, historical fiction, stories about hyphenated Americans, and books about everyday people doing everyday things. Right now I’m reading another Maeve Binchy book, I just love her.
And The Book of Beast. I’m reading The Book of Beast that accompanies my BodyBeast workout. I know exactly what that says about me.

I loved the joy luck club but still haven’t read the kitchen god’s wife. I’ve heard it’s awesome. my book tastes vary but I usually like historical/period stuff (reading the white queen right now), some magic-y stuff (the night circus) and I guess young adult literature (just finished the divergent series, even though I didn’t love it). wonder what my tastes say about me? ha.

You will love this book then, Jackie! HMMM historical stuff sounds very cool! I wonder if that flows with your attorney side?? I heard so much about the Divergent series but couldn’t do it! I’m going to look into the White Queen!

This is for my overachievers!

Once I realized what was going on underneath all of the over planning and prevention, I found a way to relax more.

Comment read and I’ll send it to you.
I had to believe that no matter what I was looking I had to believe that no matter what I was looking at in front of me (a dusty ranch style house that looked like an abandoned outpost), this could be my dream house.

I kept reassuring myself that it could happen even though I had no idea how that would be possible unless I completely rebuilt the house.

Then I let it just sort of appear as I kept staring at the house.

Staring as a big part of having the vision come to you.

It took many years, but I’m very excited to come down the driveway each day.

paint and lime wash were absolutely transformational for the exterior renovation.

As we play around the house, or drink coffee outside, I look at the house fondly and appreciate the beauty and how it serves us.

Changing your beliefs we’ll set off a chain reaction for beautiful things to come.

I decided it was time to focus on my health so I started exercising and by week 3 I was quitting-this is from someone who used to be in the military and loves fitness.

Being a mom is different!

I decided to start with mindset. I did a specific technique and weight loss started and just got easier.

Being healthy became automatic.

I didn’t need more hours in the day and it wasn’t another job to add to my list.
I started this window treatment transformation yea I started this window treatment transformation years ago and I’ve been avoiding this part ever since.

I finally ordered this curtain rod from the same company in a different size, but the color ended up being the wrong “gold/brass” tone.

Then I ordered these curtains and the color is not at all how I expected. I was thinking fresh spring and these have a dustier tone. Gorgeous just not the same vibe I had imagined.

It’s taking imperfect action that gives you clarity.

I could scroll until the cows came home but I just had to start with something physical I could look at and decide if it was a go or not.

Tell me what you think in the comments! I’llsend you all the details of this project.
This summer I took a break from keeping up with my This summer I took a break from keeping up with my own high expectations and then a newsletter that I write in the margins of my life ended up on a list with authors I’ve admired for years.

Coincidence?

“Top 100 Rising in Faith and Spirituality,” on Substack.
For a hot second I was a list with the author of Eat, Pray, Love! What!

I have to constantly retrain my mind to know that good things happen no matter what. I don’t have to toil to have what I want.

Yes, we have to signal to the world what we want to attract but it doesn’t have to feel like a burden.

We create the reality we experience.

What would you allow yourself to receive if you believed that you were allowed to rest?
