How To Pack For A Cruise

January 27, 2014 · In: LIFESTYLE, Travel, Uncategorized

Look, I was a Navy sailor for about one hot second and my time on warships gave me the biggest aversion to the concept of “cruising.” Then came my husband who invited me on a family cruise in the Caribbean. Well, it was actually fantastic…(side note-except for the workers on the ship who were extremely kind but living in an indentured servitude kind of way with long work hours and months away from their families…hmmm kind of like the Navy).

On a last ditch effort to make a baby moon happen this week, we booked an insanely good deal on a Southern Caribbean cruise. P.S. cruise ships won’t let you on past 23/24 weeks of pregnancy (check with the cruise line).

**I will still be posting for the week. I’ll post pics on Instagram and Facebook when we get wifi access!

Cruising is like a floating Las Vegas that is less smokey, more family friendly, everything is included (except a few things like alcohol or spa treatments) and you get to pull into gorgeous ports for a day at a time.

You are going to meet people like this, who know how to have a good time, no matter what:

Packing List:

**Bring enough clothing so that you do not need to do laundry. It can cost $25 for a really small bag or $2.50 per undergarment! It’s there if you really need it. Usually there is a clothesline in your bathroom where you can rinse your swim suits or a few pairs of unmentionables if needed.

**Go ahead, pack heavy. Remember how the people on the Titanic brought all these steamer trunks? Yeah, like that! You don’t want to be using the leche of a donkey because you forgot your favorite cold cream…or do you???

IMG_1902

Formal Wear: Find out how many there will be. There will also be nice restaurants aside from the usual dining room (the usual dining room is very nice and included in your fee, sometimes there are other restaurants that cost an additional fee) so find out the dress code in case you want to go to those as well. Clothing ranges everywhere from semi-sundress to ball gowns and tuxes. Pack a shawl! THIS is why I was trying on all my stretchy dresses last week!

IMG_1457This cruise ship had an English pub. Neat.

Some cruises will have theme nights like a “white party” or the Supberbowl may be happening that week so bring your team gear.

Casual dresses-You will live in these on a cruise. They’re easy! This black one got a lot of wear.

IMG_2324

Bring an inexpensive cross body bag that you won’t mind getting sunscreen all over and that won’t attract pickpocketers. I got this one from Forever 21. Also bring a “pool bag.” My airline carry-on LeSport Sac bag doubles for this.

Casual Attire-Be sure to have evening outfits that are warmer and comfortable too just for going to dinner or bowling. You can have some jeans on hand but think more like cropped pants with sandals or skirts.

Swimsuits: I would bring at least 2 (unless you’re pregnant like me and only have one large mumu type to your name). These are easy to rinse out and hang in your room shower. Have a few cover-ups to wear to and from the pool area.

Shoes: Bring really comfortable, flat, good walking shoes in case you want to do one of the more active excursions in port. We did a cruise in that stopped in Athens, Greece and comfortable shoes were so helpful when climbing the Acropolis.

IMG_1014

You need sandals/flip flops for pool and beach time. Sneakers for the gym.Formal shoes and some comfy casual shoes to wear while playing in the arcade or for board games in the library.

Exercise Clothes: The cruise ships have really nice gyms and they usually have a bunch of equipment facing a big window with a gorgeous view of the ocean! Bring some headphones and an iPod. Some ships have basketball courts and even rock climbing walls.

PJs, lots of undergarments.

Camera & toiletries.

No need to pack:

a blowdryer-we’ve had one in every room so far

towels-the ship will lend out towels to you for the room, pool, beach, spa etc.

For the flight there, here is your perfectly packed carry-on. I would even suggest you pack one set of clothes in your carry on in case your luggage gets lost. This has happened to one of our family members on the last family cruise and Chris’ bag was lost on our last trip to Seattle. If they lose your bags,..go shopping.

Bon Voyage!

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
