I used to tease Chris when he would voluntarily list all the things that he needed to be happy because they seemed so obvious to me: I need sunshine, nature etc. He sounds like a plant. Actually he has it all right. He knows exactly the things he needs to be happy and he’s always working toward having those things.
1. Physical Environment
Do you thrive in sundresses/shorts or are you that one person who looks really good in Uggs 24/7? Personally I just have to be somewhere I need to wear sunglasses every day (makes my forehead look smaller and adds mystique-both equally important).
What do you think about having a yard, wood floors, a huge kitchen or an en suite (connected to your bedroom) bathroom?
2. Work
Humans need to work. Idle hands equal depression. Look at the studies of Indians who were placed on reservations, given cash and no longer “needed” to work.
Do you want to be the Napoleon of a corporation or an independent entrepreneur?
3. Relationships
Is your community online Starcraft friends, your significant other, family, church or the Saturday beach cleanup team? Community is necessary to human happiness.
4. Health
What type of lifestyle allows you to ENJOY exercise? Is it 80 hour weeks with midnight treadmill hamstering, long lunch hours for outdoor walks or a set-your-own schedule type of format?
How can you eat well? Do you have to afford a personal chef or just need enough time/energy at the end of the day to cook (AKA Whole Foods hot food bar)?
5. Money
What brand of denim do you “need” to be happy or how many vacations do you need a year?
**Talk to your friends/partners about these specs and support one another in your goals. Do you surround yourself with people who support your happy points? Do you foster theirs?
Make your list NOW! Remember to look at what you NEED to be happy and what would be a bonus.
Would you share with me your short list?
