Someone Asks You: How Much Money Do You Make?

September 26, 2013 · In: MONEY

IMG_1331

I have a humiliating professional confession to make. Years ago, when I worked for a headhunting firm, I was at a job fair with some colleagues. This was my first week on the job. It was my first job right out of the military. In the military, you are paid by your ranking. Your ranking is given based on years served, qualifications etc. Each rank has a base pay and there are monthly “bonus” type pays added onto that for reasons like-speaks another language, was away from family for 30 days etc. All of these pay scales are published and accessible by anyone. So, you know exactly what your stateroom mate makes as well as what your commanding officer makes. Men and women make the same amount. Very transparent.

This headhunting job was my first job after the Navy and it was composed of former military people who helped other former military people find Fortune 500 jobs. Well, as I was interviewing for this job, I had negotiated a higher pay than had been offered to me. I had also been offered an amount (unbeknownst to me) that was higher than some other people who had a similar position.

I WAS NAIVE.

At the job fair, the two other recruiters were warming up to me and we were getting to know each other. Surprisingly, one of them asked me what I was getting paid. I brushed it off, instinctively knowing it wasn’t a good idea to discuss it but then both of them kept pushing me and eventually wore me down, telling me it was no big deal (they were confident that it was less than their paychecks). When I told them the amount, the look on their faces told me I had made a HUGE mistake. “WHAT?” The other two had been with the company for a while and told me their pay. It was very different.

Now as the week goes on, all of a sudden, these two guys are nowhere to be found and do not answer their phones when I am supposed to attend meetings with them. I miss out on an event we were supposed to attend together (they had all the info and offered to give me a ride but disappeared without me). They begin to compete with me in strange ways at work. If we were grabbing lunch somewhere between meetings they told me I should pay for theirs.

Luckily, it had no effect on my actual performance but it felt TERRIBLE. Of course that isn’t a good idea. I am so happy that I had that experience though. If it had been the other way around and I had found out I made less than someone, I would have just thought to work harder and get a raise or quit because I wasn’t being compensated appropriately.

If I knew how much this pictured Turkish rug weaver made, would I want to buy that rug for the price they are asking for it?

Have you ever run into this situation? What happened?

I had to simplify weight loss because I have so many other things I want to pour my energy into!

You see me doing a million things but I’m actually impatient and lazy. I’m a Taurus who loves to lounge and eat donuts.

I found a way to eat donuts, lose weight and do it with the least effort.

The food is easy. The prep is easy. I don’t even think about it anymore.

I started my journey in the summer and it was the best life upgrade of the year.

There have been times when I thought gosh how did I get into this situation?

I had to remind myself that I could get myself out of it.

I had to remind myself that I had the power to create the life that I wanted.

I hope there’s something that you want that you’ve decided to experience for yourself.

Not someday or if this or if that.

1. Tying my worthiness to outcomes- at the end of each day I focus on how the day felt, over what got done.

There are days when I am a super DOER and I also have heartburn.

I want less days like that and more days that feel peaceful regardless of the list.

2. Earning rest-If I feel like eating donuts and sleeping on the sofa all Saturday morning, that’s awesome. Don’t need permission and don’t need to apologize-just enjoy.

3. Saying “I should”- That’s a 100% red flag for something I SHOULDN’T do.

That’s a signal that it’s something that someone else says I should be doing-not my inner authority.

4. Needing things to be hard- I say things like “Show me how easy this gets to be,” (and I believe it). The proof presents itself.

5. Needing it to be perfect before sharing-not that I’m sharing the hot mess, just that it can be 80% and ready for the world.

It’s so frustrating to feel like you can’t improve It’s so frustrating to feel like you can’t improve your life. You feel like you need more- money, creativity, luck.

That’s actually not true though.

When I fall into this trap, I do this…

Here’s the trick.

When you ask yourself “why is this so hard” your brain goes to work finding every reason it is.

BUT when you ask “why is this so easy for me?” “Why is it all falling into place?”

Your brain has to find proof of that instead.

Different question. A completely different experience.

Keep asking that question all day! Stop asking “Is it working?” Just do it!

Try it on your house. Your body. Anything you’ve been stuck on and tell me what happens!

Do you use mindset tricks like this?

How many times was I going to send this listing to How many times was I going to send this listing to my friend and my husband, asking if it’s worth a 45 minute drive to go pick this up?

If I waited any longer, it was going to be gone.

But what if that was a sign that it wasn’t for me?

where was my sign from the universe?

I just knew this was going to give our family room the cozy vibe I wanted.

Everything else in the room was new so it needed something to feel warmer, unexpected, collected and personal.

I kept holding the phone up to the couch trying to picture it.

It belonged here.

She was asking $100 and I asked if $80 would be ok. It was deal and we were off on a long trip, deep into the city.

Was this going straight to Goodwill?

She put the cutest note on top and her roommate helped up load it into our truck.

I dumped a bunch of water on it and gave it a good scrub plus some scraping off of candle wax. No problem!

Truly, what’s meant for you will never pass you by.

When you search and shop with that vibe, all the right stuff will arrive in your feed and you’ll get the perfect piece.

No kidding, within a day of DECIDING my coffee table was going to be on Marketplace, it showed up.
