How To Get Out of a Ticket

June 25, 2013 · In: Favorites, How To, Uncategorized

Porsche Pulled Over
Sitting in the passenger seat of my friend’s Porsche while she tries to talk her way out of a ticket.

Have you ever gotten out of a ticket? We all have our own internal relationships with authority figures, especially the law enforcement variety. I am half Asian and there are some major stereotypes here with driving. Here are two experiences I’ve had.

Rolled through a stop sign/California stop/kind of stopped & no one was coming so kept going.

I had gone out to a local bar about 5 minutes from my home to meet friends for a drink. I had one drink when I arrived and left 2 hours later for home. Two blocks from my house I rolled through a stop sign and was immediately pulled over by an unseen police car.

“Do you know why I pulled you over,” he asked. Truly, I wasn’t sure because I probably thought I stopped “enough” and didn’t see anything else wrong. “No, officer, I don’t,” I truthfully admitted. “Well, you didn’t make a complete stop at the sign,” he accused. He was probably right. Then he asked if I had been drinking-it was late on a Saturday night in a fun part of town. “Yes, officer, I had one drink about 2 hours ago. I’m on my way home. I’m coming from ******* establishment (a few minutes away). I’m extremely tired and my home is 2 blocks away.”

He let me go with a stern lesson on stop sign safety and I thanked him. I took a few moments to breathe deeply in my car, he followed me home and took off.

In a left hand turn lane at a red arrow.

The straight through traffic light turned green as the arrow turned green. I realized I needed to go straight. There was no oncoming traffic and I merged into the straight lane and through the intersection. BWEWWW BWEEWWW. Pulled over.

He told me that I had made a traffic violation because I had gone through a red light. “Actually, officer, both lights were green,” I corrected. Risky to challenge the cop, I KNOW, but I couldn’t let it go. He was totally ok with it! I explained to him that I was on a lunch break, on my way back to work from taking a co-worker to pick up her car at the shop. I was a little lost so I ended up in the wrong lane and was correcting. I had made sure to merge into the straight traffic before entering the intersection.

Then he explained to me that crossing a solid white line (as in the one dividing the turn lane and through traffic) is not illegal. I still have to look that one up. He let me go and that was that!

The bottom line is that police officers are people too and they deal with the same stuff we do. I really feel that they appreciate being spoken to as a real person as long as they are still given the respect of an authority figure.

  • It is up to YOU to choose a safe location to pull over. You can slow down so they know you’re not evading or put on your hazard lights until you find a well-lit, safe area.
  • Consider explaining your method of decision-making and any factors influencing your choices. Just because they pull you over does not mean that a ticket is going to be issued.
  • Keep your body language relaxed and your voice calm.
  • It’s ok to be scared. Take a deep breath and communicate clearly.
  • Cooperate immediately.
  • Address he or she as “Officer,” as often as possible.
  • Consider apologizing if you are in the wrong.
  • Ask for some help in your “sentencing,” after you have given them to opportunity to offer it.
  • Thank them for upholding justice, keeping the roads safe and making it a tolerable experience.

Even if you still get a ticket, they can lower the fee or severity if they feel you “learned your lesson.” The worst thing that could happen is a ticket. You’ll live. The best could be that you are reminded to be a more conscious driver with just a warning!

Chris recently got pulled over for rolling past a stop line before stopping and told the officer he just had an argument with his wife so he wasn’t paying attention. That guy MUST know what that’s like. He let him go! Goes to show that cops don’t just let cute girls off the hook.

Please share your stories!

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
