The Gift to END all Gifts

March 29, 2013 · In: Favorites, Korean, TMI, Uncategorized

One lovely Christmas morning, after all the gifts had been opened, my unpredictable mother shifted into a secretive, whisper-like tone and said, “Girls (to my little sister and I), wouldn’t it be wonderful to know you had a beautiful place to go one day?”  On that note, my father rolled his eyes and said, “I’ll be upstairs,” as he beelined it out of the family room to find refuge in his second story office.  Tracey and I looked at one another in that unsaid knowing/mom is so strange/what now kind of way.  “You know,” she continued without skipping a beat from my dad’s departure, “a place that you knew you had for yourself.”  Oh, we thought, reading each others’ minds, mom and dad have purchased a get-away-house in the country!!!!  Yay!  She stares at us with her secret still kept, salivating at our anticipation.  The silence and expectation are too thick so I break it with, “So, mom, you bought a second home?” “No,” she says, “even better.”  Wow, we’re thinking, what could possibly outshine a vacation home?”

“Girls, it is a place with mountains, a view of the water and the best location on a hillside.”  Mom is bursting with the element of surprise.  She has surely selected the ultimate Christmas gift with careful planning and it is now time to finally unveil the gift of a lifetime.  She has never been good with keeping good-news secrets but this time she shines.  When she can’t stand it another second, she triumphs,”Your father and I have bought you grave plots!!!!”

“Whhhhhatttttt,” Tracey and I say in total confusion and shock.  Mom is now giddy with pleasure at the assured thrill we must be experiencing.  Tracey and I then burst into a total giggle riot.  She is confusing our nervous reaction  and continues.  “We have 8,” mom gloats.  “We have 8 grave plots,” I ask-there are only four of us-mom, dad, Tracey and myself.  Ahhhhh…the foreseeable husband and two-children-a-piece we will be having.  I hear my father groan from upstairs.  He’s never been a fan of death-talk where on the other hand, my mother has even gone as far to give my father permission to remarry (as long as the new wife is not Korean like herself) in the case she passes before him.   The security in knowing where she will one day lie is absolutely heavenly to her and to give that to us is the greatest gift she can give.

“Thank you,” we say in a questioning tone.  She finally senses our disconnect and is flabbergasted at our lack of enthusiasm and gratitude.  Picking up on her disappointment, we immediately shift and begin to grant her the appreciation and excitement she yearns for.  So, here it is….

It is still a nice gesture of her. In the korean culture, a family grave plot is very important.

I totally agree! It was very comical at the time but in retrospect, it was the most incredible gift she could give us. I am so proud of my Korean culture and I understand it more as I get older. Thank you! How do you know about Korean culture?

The best/worst part is that when Mom says it in her accent, it totally could pass for “Hollywood.” … … …I still tell people I have a place in Hollywood.

Mountains and waters are nice but don’t really matter after 8 p.m. THAT is when the cemetery closes. My mom reminds us to tell that to our friends. Consider yourself informed. 🙂

I had to simplify weight loss because I have so many other things I want to pour my energy into!

You see me doing a million things but I’m actually impatient and lazy. I’m a Taurus who loves to lounge and eat donuts.

I found a way to eat donuts, lose weight and do it with the least effort.

The food is easy. The prep is easy. I don’t even think about it anymore.

I started my journey in the summer and it was the best life upgrade of the year.

Follow @christinajwarren to make life easier and more enjoyable simply with your attitude.

All possibilities are equally available at all times.

You have the free will to reach out and touch whichever one you choose

There have been times when I thought gosh how did I get into this situation?

I had to remind myself that I could get myself out of it.

I had to remind myself that I had the power to create the life that I wanted.

I hope there’s something that you want that you’ve decided to experience for yourself.

Not someday or if this or if that.

Cheering you on, my friend!

1. Tying my worthiness to outcomes- at the end of each day I focus on how the day felt, over what got done.

There are days when I am a super DOER and I also have heartburn.

I want less days like that and more days that feel peaceful regardless of the list.

2. Earning rest-If I feel like eating donuts and sleeping on the sofa all Saturday morning, that’s awesome. Don’t need permission and don’t need to apologize-just enjoy.

3. Saying “I should”- That’s a 100% red flag for something I SHOULDN’T do.

That’s a signal that it’s something that someone else says I should be doing-not my inner authority.

4. Needing things to be hard- I say things like “Show me how easy this gets to be,” (and I believe it). The proof presents itself.

5. Needing it to be perfect before sharing-not that I’m sharing the hot mess, just that it can be 80% and ready for the world.

It’s so frustrating to feel like you can’t improve It’s so frustrating to feel like you can’t improve your life. You feel like you need more- money, creativity, luck.

That’s actually not true though.

When I fall into this trap, I do this…

Here’s the trick.

When you ask yourself “why is this so hard” your brain goes to work finding every reason it is.

BUT when you ask “why is this so easy for me?” “Why is it all falling into place?”

Your brain has to find proof of that instead.

Different question. A completely different experience.

Keep asking that question all day! Stop asking “Is it working?” Just do it!

Try it on your house. Your body. Anything you’ve been stuck on and tell me what happens!

Do you use mindset tricks like this?

How many times was I going to send this listing to How many times was I going to send this listing to my friend and my husband, asking if it’s worth a 45 minute drive to go pick this up?

If I waited any longer, it was going to be gone.

But what if that was a sign that it wasn’t for me?

where was my sign from the universe?

I just knew this was going to give our family room the cozy vibe I wanted.

Everything else in the room was new so it needed something to feel warmer, unexpected, collected and personal.

I kept holding the phone up to the couch trying to picture it.

It belonged here.

She was asking $100 and I asked if $80 would be ok. It was deal and we were off on a long trip, deep into the city.

Was this going straight to Goodwill?

She put the cutest note on top and her roommate helped up load it into our truck.

I dumped a bunch of water on it and gave it a good scrub plus some scraping off of candle wax. No problem!

Truly, what’s meant for you will never pass you by.

When you search and shop with that vibe, all the right stuff will arrive in your feed and you’ll get the perfect piece.

No kidding, within a day of DECIDING my coffee table was going to be on Marketplace, it showed up.

If you’re into the power of your vibes creating your whole world, follow @christinajwarren where we cultivate inner peace to create a beautiful life from the inside out.
