The OTHER Secret

February 27, 2013 · In: Uncategorized

DSC02698

The Secret is a best selling book on the law of attraction but the OTHER secret is the secret YOU’VE been keeping.  Being of a  “liver constitution” which I will explain in another article (it has to do with my facial features), I am a shareholder of many secrets.  I have heard the virginal confessions of patients, friends and strangers.  I have the same reaction to hearing every secret.  It is, “wow, I am so grateful to be a witness to your willingness to be vulnerable and grow.”  In other words, if you find out the reason you have trouble swallowing is a thyroid tumor, I could be excited that you now know how to get it treated and soon you’ll be able swallow well again!  The content of the secret is really not as intriguing to me as the person’s emotional and mental bravery.

Do you have a secret that has never left your lips?  Is there something about you that NO ONE on this earth knows about?  Why?  Spend a moment here.  Now, if there WAS someone you would share this with, who would it be?  Imagine yourself telling this person-it could be a friend, spouse, therapist, priest, bartender etc.  What would be the worst reaction you would get?  How would that make you feel.  Now what would be the best reaction and how would that feel?

This is what Happens when you Tell a Secret:

1.  PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder):  There is an aspect of fight or flight response that is reprogrammed in your cellular memory that changes when you tell someone a secret.  Anything that used to trigger feelings or memories surrounding the secret can shift.  For example, if you secretly had an abortion and fear judgment, you may get uncomfortable when the topic comes up in conversations.  After sharing it with someone you may then be able to face the topic in discussion (not necessarily your own experience) without a rapid heart rate and sweaty palms.

2. Space:  Now you have more space in your emotional and mental fields to conduct positive activity rather than fear and worry.  Out with the old!

3. Support & Community:  Realizing you are not alone is the single most saught after feeling in the universe (Hello- the movie Contact).  Connect with other people who share your secret if you like.  Research how other people have healed by addressing their secrets.  You are guaranteed to find other people with the same secret.

4.  Freedom:  The act of voicing a secret is incredibly empowering.  It can feel like dropping a weight or removing hand cuffs.  Sharing you secret also encourages others to do the same.

How to find out if you are ready to share your secret:

1.  You imagine how amazing it would feel to be free of the secret’s burden.  The positive things I addressed above sound enticing.  You are ready to have these wonderful results.

2.  You recognize that this secret is holding you back from enjoying life.  You are ready to start living.

Take it easy on yourself and Take Judgement out of the Equation.  Here is a list of who you can tell:

1.  Find someone who has kept the same types of secrets.  An Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor can relate to someone with a closet addiction.

2.  Find a professional.  Tell a health care professional or a counselor.  The more experience they have, the more likely they’ve heard your type of secret many times and the more tried advice they can offer.  Many of these people are required by law NEVER to share your secret (unless your life is in danger).

3.  Tell someone who loves you.

What is more powerful than sharing your secret with a person?  That would be sharing it with multiple people.  Some secrets are better shared in smaller circles but consider finding more than one safe confidant and see how it makes you feel.  I remember when I told a friend that I had been cheated on, the shame I had associated with it dissipated.  I learned that many people shared my experiences and had similar feelings.  I had a completely new perspective on the experience.  I could let go of many of the negative feelings and fears I had.  Now it is just something that happened without a lot of the junk I had built up in my own head.  Secrets are BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH!  They eat away at you.

I think that’s why this website is so popular: http://www.postsecret.com/

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
