What can a Headhunter do for Me?

February 16, 2013 · In: MONEY

IMG_0272

As I was getting out of the Navy, I enlisted the help of a headhunter agency who specifically helped Officers get jobs with Fortune 500 companies.  I had no clue as to what was going on outside of the big grey war ship I was working on.  What is a headhunter?  Headhunter firms approach companies offering to prescreen potential candidates for jobs prior to interviews at the actual companies.  Services range from simply marketing your resume to specific companies to holding your hand through the entire process.  I’m going to talk about the full-service kind.

The headhunting process is a lot like Patty Stranger’s Millionaire Matchmaker process.  A headhunter will start by marketing to potential candidates.  They offer wonderful services such as resume writing, interview preparation and even interview wardrobe guidance.  They actually know the types of questions you are going to be asked by their client companies and they will coach you.

The headhunter will interview you to find your interests, strengths, experience, location preferences, salary requirements etc.  They are really good at picking up on marketable qualities that you yourself may not even be aware of.  Once you’ve been type-casteded, you will be presented with some job options.  You will select the ones you like and then its time for grooming.

The headhunter will provide presentations either with or on the behalf of the companies’ hiring staff. They will give you a feeling of work culture and job responsibilities.  These presentations are made to make your mouth water.  Then comes time for the specific training for each of your interviews.  I remember in the pharmaceutical industry job interviews it was common to be presented with, “I want to buy a pen.  Sell me this pen.”  The untrained responce would include something like, “oh, this pen writes smoothly and activates easily with a click!”  The interviewer is looking for someone who responds, “well, what kind of pen are you looking for?”  The interviewer then gives parameters of their ideal pen and the candidate presents the pen in that fashion requested.  Trust me, I had no idea how to properly pass that test.  The headhunter is going to get you to the level of sophistication required.

Then come the actual interviews with your selected companies.  After each interview the headhunter will talk to you and the potential employer to see how it went.  The company will most likely contact you directly with any follow-on information such as a second interview or to turn you down.  Once the job offer is in place, you have officially been accepted by the company to be hired.  This is when negotiation can and should take place.  I will talk about that in a later post.  Headhunters can even assist you in getting the most out of your negotiations.  They can even talk to a company to encourage more compensation if the company wants you and you are on the fence.  Now that you have an offer that you love, you accept the offer.  Congratulations!

So, how does a headhunter make money?  The headhunter is compensated when the company hires you.  The compensation is usually a percentage of your salary and is not paid out until 3 months or so of consistent employment.

Why should I use a Headhunter and why they are awesome :

1. Their services are FREE: resume writing, interview coaching, negotiation wardrobe prepping.

2. They have a foot in the door with companies.  Use that connection!

3. They act as a middle man to get you a job-they do a lot of work for you. Its in his or her best interest to get you hired!

4. You want to try a new job genre where you have ZERO direct experience.  Headhunters will be able to get you in front of these employers based on selling your applicable experience and putting their name on the line.

Some things to consider:

1. You are limited to the companies they can offer and the ones THE HEADHUNTER thinks you will fill.  Yes, they are incentivized to get you hired.  No, they are not incentivized to make your dream job come true.  There could be jobs they have that are not offered to you based on the headhunter’s needs to fill.

2. These are jobs are out in the market, not ones you get through “who you know.” (discussed in an upcoming article) There may be something else out there that they just don’t work with.

So, after multiple screenings by my headhunter firm, they offered me a job as a headhunter.  What?!   Well, thank goodness, because I was beginning to wonder why they had been screening me for so long and really withholding potential job positions!!  I had started in the direction of working with other headhunting firms!  I took the job and learned the secret world of jobs that I will be sharing with you.

Have you used a headhunter?  What were their strengths/weaknesses? What specific opportunities were you given?

Sometimes headhunters call me and leave me very strange voicemails. Then I call back, talk to them for a few minutes, and they tell me I don’t actually fit their profile. 🙁

That can be so annoying when people in sales cast such a wide net! At the same time, there can be some free help there with info, resume writing/conditioning, connections etc. I wonder what kinds of things attorney headhunters are looking for???

It’s usually other stuff I get called for – contract admin, stuff like that. I’m not licensed in California so I don’t get attorney recruiters calling.

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.

The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! I The baby diaper brown paint was stealing my joy! It felt overwhelming to figure out the style, solutions and repairs this patio needed.

When you’re overwhelmed, it’s just that you’ve got to figure out your priorities.

When Everything feels equally important the list is too long and you feel paralyzed with where to start.

This goes for your day today-unspiral from the overwhelm and focus on the priorities.

When I was ready to stop looking at that terrible color, I got out the paint samples and started imagining the deck all white.

What helped me what visiting a nearby winery that had a similar structure. It was Texas but still had a European vibe and fit into the landscape.

Get out there and soak up some beautiful inspiration.

I made this project my focus for a month and then called the painters and then moved on to the rest of the exterior in chunks. Then it was time to call the painters!

to say I’m obsessed with it would be an understatement.

It brightens this whole room

The green trees on the property just pop against it. The blue of the water looks even more crystal clear.

This big blank wall in the living room made me fee This big blank wall in the living room made me feel like I was living in a box with no personality or charm.

It felt so drab and cold.

Without even measuring, I purchased the sideboard on the spot at @theporch in Round Top and brought it home.

It fit!

I knew it was me because it had neutral tones and a french feel.

It has evolved over the years and it almost feels like a built in part of our home at this point.

The large art was a definite yes. I had seen it for years and it felt so me.

That’s how I know an investment piece is right-it will feel so YOU!

The formula for this vignette:
A base piece of furniture
Large scale art
Picture Light
Frames
Lamps
Piled books
Objects of interest

You can feel even in this small area before and after design that the feeling has changed!

Tiny changes create massive emotional shifts.

Now this space makes me feel comforted, rich in life and rooted.

Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/bra Comment COLOR and I’ll dm you the exact colors/brands that we used to achieve this look.

We lived here for years before tackling the exterior and it was kind of painful.

Every time I’d drive home, I knew I loved my house but geez it was so BROWN!

It felt like an old mission or outpost.

It didn’t feel like me and it kind of dragged me down.

I’m a woman who lives a beautiful life, what’s wrong with my house? ha!

I kept looking at photos of other homes to see what could be achieved here.

although I couldn’t find exact matches, I got inspired and bold.

I knew I was always drawn to white and yellow homes the most so I just started testing.

It was horrifying part way through because there is no going back!

Remember this: You have to see it in your mind first and then it can become a reality. It’s ok if it takes a few steps in the wrong direction, just keep at it and the look will come to life in your mind.

You’ll know when it’s right. Then call the painters!
