How to Build a Beautiful Blog with WordPress + Why a Website Is the Smartest First Step

May 27, 2025 · In: Business

💫 Before you dive in: If you’re curious about how to start an soulfully aligned online business, be sure to join the A2A Collective-a free step-by-step email series to help you uncover your purpose, align with your gifts for impact to income.

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive a small commission if you choose to purchase through my links. Thank you for supporting my blog.

So you want to start a blog? Beautiful! Whether you’re dreaming of sharing your story, building a business, or creating a hub for your aesthetic, this post will walk you through exactly what you need to know—from techy terms to the tools I recommend. No overwhelm, no fluff. This is the blog post I WISH I had before I started.

A website is the smartest first step in your beautiful, soulfully aligned online business. Let’s begin with the basics:

Blog vs. Website: What's the Difference?

  • Website: This is your home on the internet. Think of it like a full house with different rooms: your homepage, about page, shop/services, contact, etc.
  • Blog: This is one of those rooms. It’s the part of your site where you post regular updates, share tips, tell stories, or educate. Blogs are powerful tools for growing trust, connection, and searchability.

You need both. A blog keeps your content fresh and positions you as an expert, while a website frames your brand beautifully. Your website shows people what you do/offer and who you help. My site is a website that includes a blog. Yours can be, too.

Quick-Start Glossary

Here are a few key terms that will help:

  • Domain: Your website address (like yourname.com).
  • Hosting: The service that “houses” your site so it lives on the internet. I recommend Bluehost for beginners: it’s reliable, affordable, and beginner-friendly. [Affiliate link here]
  • WordPress.org: The platform I use to build and run my blog. Not to be confused with WordPress.com (more on that in a sec). It’s free.

Theme/Template: The design structure for your blog. It determines how your site looks and functions.

Why I Recommend WordPress.org + Bluehost

There are many platforms out there, but here’s why I recommend WordPress.org:

  • It’s customizable
  • It’s scalable (so you don’t outgrow it)
  • You own your content
  • It’s free but I’d pay for it-it’s that good

Bluehost makes it incredibly easy to get started. They often bundle domain and hosting for one low price. Once you set that up, you can install WordPress in just a few clicks. You can call them if you ever have a problem with your site.

Use a Template (It’s the Secret to Looking Pro from Day One)

Don’t design your site from scratch. Instead, use a template. I love and recommend the stunning, feminine templates from 17th Avenue and Etsy. They give your blog a beautiful, custom look without needing to know code.

Here’s the best part:

  • You get access to amazing support from the template company (especially 17th Ave)
  • Most templates come with tutorials and guides (17th Ave tutorials are SO detailed)
  • You can usually pay a small fee to have the template installed for you

Even if you hire someone to design your site, you’ll still need to learn how to use WordPress. Why? Because every time you want to publish a new blog post, upload a freebie, or update your text, you’ll do it through WordPress’s backend. Getting comfortable there is a skill that will save you time, money, and creative frustration.

DIY vs. Hiring Someone or Hybrid

If you’re techy (or brave), you can totally set up your blog yourself using a template and Bluehost. It’s the most affordable route and gives you total control but you will pay with TIME and SWEAT equity.

Hybrid version: You can always get the add-on help shortcuts when you buy a template.

If you already have an established brand/business, have money to invest and want a super pro/authoritatvie site quickly, then hire a website designer.

Remember: learning to use WordPress is worth it. You’ll be able to:

  • Create your own blog posts
  • Add pages and buttons
  • Customize graphics and colors
  • Save money long-term

Summary: Your Quickest & Most Economical Blog Setup

  1. Sign up with Bluehost
  2. Install WordPress.org (Bluehost guides you)
  3. Purchase a template from 17th Ave, Etsy (example) etc.
**Make sure you purchase a template for WordPress.org (not for another platform like squarespace etc.)
  4. Install the template yourself OR pay a one-time fee to have it installed
  5. Learn the basics of WordPress

That’s it! You’ll be up and running with a gorgeous blog that reflects your vibe and supports your goals.

In future posts, I’ll walk you through creating buttons, graphics, and downloads using Canva so you can brand everything beautifully—even on a budget.

You’ve got this.

I got pregnant with our youngest child (4th child) I got pregnant with our youngest child (4th child) when I was 43. This was after 2 miscarriages.

Even those previous pregnancies looked better on labs and scans but this time the labs and scans said a miscarrage was 100% going to happen.

I was so confused. I knew my baby girl was coming.

I had prayed the St. Theresa Novena and received a rose. I was getting older. A third miscarriage in a row? How?

I remember crying in the office after the doctor left the room. No, not again. I loved that little baby already. It did feel different this time.

There are things in this world that we cannot see that are working at all times all around us.

I was so deeply connected to that energy during her pregnancy.
The doctor was shocked at every appointment.

My labs and scans quickly and dramatically improved and she was here.
Transforming this room for her was very joyful work.

Once I was holding her and I looked into her eyes. I said, “We have been waiting for you, little one.” I had a tear in my eye.

Her expression was so different than what I had seen from her before. She looked into my eyes with a searching look.

Then she hugged me and said, “Mommy, I love you so much.”

Our lives can change in an instant. They aren’t’ fixed. Possibility is everywhere.

Comment the word PLANT for all my houseplant info- Comment the word PLANT for all my houseplant info-what I have, how to care etc.

My girl math says anything over 8 pounds doesn’t go back to the store.

That’s kind of untrue…if it’s over 8 pounds, I’ll ask my husband to do it!

This is made for outdoor but I love the tulip like vibe to it and I am freshening up some little decor items around the house.

It feels so good in here.

The texture and weight of this planter made me love it too. It looks expensive and it’s not going to tip over with my giant plants.

Our houseplants make our home. I HIGHLY recommend you get some if you don’t already.

Ask me your questions in the comments. 🪴

House plants make your home cozy, fresh and alive. The energy is palpable.

My husband brought home a gorgeous arrangement lik My husband brought home a gorgeous arrangement like this from the florist on my birthday and I’ve been recreating it with grocery store flowers ever since.

it’s simply one bunch of hydrangeas (3stems) and one bouquet of peonies.

you can make this so quickly and it looks like an arrangement that belongs on someone’s desk or side table at an estate. Just that little extra thing that is over the top but changes everything.

I find the cutest vessels at home goods and then place a smaller glass container inside.

This floral arrangement is so fast, great for making your home feel luxurious and beautiful.

You know I love the faux florals these days but nothing makes you feel like you’re thriving like a fresh bouquet.

That raises your vibe which raises your experience.

Wishing you a great day!

Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to k Comment the word WOOD for everything you need to know to make choosing wood floors simple.

I make it easy and answer things like “what direction do I lay them?”

I was pregnant when we were renovating this home and I make different kinds of decisions when I’m pregnant. Anyone else?

I started thinking I wanted tile-wood-look flooring or fake wood because I saw all these Texas homes that did not use wood.

There must be a reason?

Was it the weather? The cost bc the homes are big? Pets? I thought I’d be responsible and choose something hardy…

Except I only like wood!

It’s really a personal preference and a lifestyle thing.
I LOVE natural materials and there is nothing like wood flooring to make a home feel cozy and expensive.

Almost 7 years later and we are still in love with these.
The feeling of your home is so powerful in creating the movie in your mind of what a dream life really is.

Renovations can feel overwhelming. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important to you and knowing what you love.

The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Co The high kitchen shelf from Nancy Meyers’ “It’s Complicated” kitchen was living rent free in my brain.

I’ve lived so so many places as a kid and adult. Whenever I move into a place and it feels sterile, I stress!

I need a lived in feeling and this dining room was giving me temporary apartment vibes.

Seriously, decor and design can make ANY space feel like a home. Your home.

I spend a lot of time sanding this. It was actually really therapeutic actually as I was processing the passing of an old friend.

I was also caught grief sanding in my garage wearing what I call my urban YETI uniform when a neighbor dropped by.

I looked like a crazy person (I am). It gave me a laugh.

I love how it turned out. It gives the space an opportunity for decorative objects, and feels like a cozy little roof.

It also turned the blinds into a sort of inset blind vibe that elevates the tone.

I had these outside mounted so they match the rest of the room where some windows require it.

It’s 8 inches deep. That’s the measurement that felt right and it fit my future French soup tureens.

You’ve got to take a chance if you want something incredible. It’s just nails, paint and time. It holds the feeling of your home.

When your home reflects what you feel inside, your experience in life just improves everywhere.
