Scenario 1: Okay, it’s Valentines Day and you have a date with “the one.” You’re new in town and haven’t had time to find your go-to mustache waxer yet. Yelp! says Susan down the street charges $5 and Yvonne on 5th charges $25. This is not the time to pull up your excel budget spreadsheet.
Scenario 2: It’s your eighteenth birthday and life is perfect. Then your mother decides to tell you that your real father is Brad Pitt. She begs that you please keep it from your NOW step-father and NOW half-sister. Is it true or is your mom delusional? There is a therapist who charges by donation or a therapist who charges $250 an hour.
Scenario 3: It has been your lifelong dream to be a a professional photographer like Annie Liebovitz. She does not return your 87 emails or 52 letters asking for a chance to apprentice. However, she does photograph clients for $2,500 a session and you can make an appointment directly on her website.
Sometimes you seriously need an expert and the experts can charge a lot.
The reasons we pay the big bucks:
1). This person is a specialist. They do one thing VERY well and there are a limited number of people who do what they do. They are unique in their field and seem to have a natural talent for their craft. They have paid with time and money to get the education and expertise. They have higher expenses including maintaining their license and business location. They actually love what they do for work.
2). These professionals see less people. That means they have time to cultivate themselves by taking their own advice and being the role model you are seeking. In their free time they are also learning new and different ways to make your experience more valuable. With less clients/patients (CPs) they are able to spend more time with each CP. They are available to work with you until the work is done, when you need them. They have the energy to give you in each session.
3.) Their work speaks for them. They have success stories. They don’t need to advertise. Their CPs do it for them.
4.) “Because you’re worth it” just like Loreal Cosmetics says. This service is critical in enhancing your well-being, self esteem and happiness. I can’t always afford top dollar for everything but I’ll tell you that my eyebrow waxer and OBGYN are the best in Seattle.
5.) You learn through example. When you are a subject matter expert (SME) with highly tuned skills that people connect with, you too can charge a gazillion dollars for an appointment. You will only learn this from watching the pros in action as their CP. I went to the best healers for alternative medicine treatments so that I could mimic their talents in my own acupuncture practice.
The time to access the crème de la crème is when:
1.) You have a lot of disposable income to spare. Sounds good doesn’t it?
2.) You have narrowed down the modality of choice and this is where your resources are going to funnel.
3.) You can’t afford it now but you’re going to charge it to your credit card because the help you get here is going to get you to a place where you will soon be able to pay cash. Suze Orman, please don’t kill me.
So, decide what services are most crucial to you in having an expert. Let me know about your experiences in using the BEST of the BEST. What makes them so good? Why is it worth it? I could talk for hours about my esthetician or my chiropractor. 🙂
